SOUTHSIDE ELEMENTARY Writing Requirements per Grade Level
Kentucky Regulation 703 KAR 5:010 states: To ensure that a reasonable amount of time is devoted to the production of writing portfolio pieces, schools and districts shall develop a procedure to collect writing pieces at non-accountability levels that are appropriate types of writing for portfolio categories.

KINDERGARTEN: (TOTAL OF 3 ROUGH DRAFT PIECES)
- One rough draft of each piece: literary or personal expressive, transactive, reflective
- Two rough drafts in any genre
- One additional piece showing revisions; may or may not take to the final publishing stage.
SECOND GRADE: (TOTAL OF 1 ROUGH DRAFT AND 2 REVISED PIECES)
- One rough draft from any genre
- Two pieces showing 3 stages of development: initial piece, conferencing piece, and final copy
THIRD GRADE: (TOTAL OF 3 PIECES, AND 2 OPEN RESPONSE SAMPLES)
- One final copy of each piece: literary, transactive, and personal expressive
- One Open Response in Reading
- One Open Response in Math
FOURTH GRADE: 3 PORTFOLIO QUALITY SUBMISSIONS AND 3 O R.
- One piece either literary or personal narrative
- One piece transactive
- One reflective (must show link between reading and writing)
- One Open Response in Reading
- One Open Response in Math
- One Open Response in Science
(Right now, according to policy, the working folders should be purged at 4th grade, and would only include these 3 completed pieces. We may want revise this depending upon what the final word from the state is…)
FIFTH GRADE: (TOTAL OF 3 PIECES AND 3 O R)
- One Writing on Demand – transactive
- One Writing on Demand – letter
- One Writing on Demand – feature article
- One Open Response in Reading
- One Open Response in Math
- One Open Response in Social Studies
*PROCEDURE TO COLLECT WORKING FOLDERS: Teachers will collect work in individual student folders. Folders will remain in classrooms until the end of the school year. At this time they will be placed in students cumulative folders.
